Holiday Camp this year ran from December 27th to January 1st. We said goodbye to 2017 and welcomed in 2018 with 15 dancing campers and 7 staff members! Despite the frigid temperatures, we managed to go sledding, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. When it got too cold, we all huddled together in the cape around a game of bananagrams or baked warm chocolate chip cookies and other sweet treats. It was a full, New England horse farm winter experience!

When we have big jobs on the farm to complete, we rely heavily on our campers to help us complete these projects. We got some new stones for in between the dorms (a full dump truck!) and we needed to even them out across the path between the dorms. We taught our campers how to kneel down and look across the gravel to see the low spots and the high spots. Using the metal rakes, our campers leveled out the stones and filled in the lower areas by taking stones from the higher areas. We are proud of our campers for taking such great care of the farm and for working to keep it beautiful.
The horses were finally released into the grassy pasture on May 20 and they could not have been happier to get back out onto the fresh grass! There was lots of galloping and then after the mad dash, the horses continued frolicking around the top of the hill across from Wheelocks. We posted about the big release on Facebook and had about 40-50 people show up to watch. It was wonderful to be able to share the beauty of the herd of horses with others. As soon as the fields dried out and were safe enough for the horses to run without slipping or creating holes, we scheduled the event! This was the first year we have ‘advertised’ this event, which Tom named ‘The Great Escape,’ and we hope that everyone who came had a wonderful time! Enjoy watching a video of the running below! 🙂
Each morning, the full time staff members at Road’s End Farm wake up and love all of the animals that live at the end of Jackson Hill Road in New Hampshire. Daisy, our yellow lab, is the farm dog that the campers love year in and year out. We have created a short film, dedicated to Daisy Dolittle the Delinquent, and we find it to have a different tune than our horse movies. We are so delighted that each camper that comes can love horses, cats, and dogs and we believe that all of these animals create the full Farm experience. These animals contribute to our camp program and we have found the campers love our household pets as much as they love the herd of horses.
With the new year at Road’s End Farm brought us two new cats. Melvin and Momo have come and made themselves at home at Road’s End. Hopefully, we will make a video of the cats soon, but for now Daisy has the spotlight. Please enjoy this short, one minute film with pictures of our favorite pup!
April camp will begin this Saturday! We have small off-season camps for campers who are interested in spending some relaxing time at the farm and reuniting with friends. As of now, we have 10 girls coming and we have lots of ponies to shed, spring jobs to complete, and fun to be had! We truly love these smaller off-season camps that allow the campers to see the Farm in different seasons and get a feel for what the camp feels like without 70 other campers. The horses are eagerly anticipating the extra attention! 🙂
